The Liberal Veil
Often when the middle east is discussed as a target of occupation, war, genocide etc, we see similar points brought up over and over and over again.
“Did you know that they throw gay people off of rooftops? Did you know that they treat women like scum and force them to be covered?”
One question these people are seemingly never asked is “do you think invading these countries will actually fix those issues”. Because the answer is never yes. Indeed, often they are less progressive in the aftermath. History has taught us that when the west invades a country it would rather institute a fascist that trades with them than a liberal that doesn't.
Someone proposing an ethnic cleansing of Gaza has never been interested in the queer politics of the territory. They have never tried to or donated to funds for LGBT people in West Asia or North Africa. Most of those advocating for the recent bombing of Iran have never cared for the plight of the Druze before or since it's use as a justification for more bloodshed.
They do not advocate for or support the funding of political institutions that would benefit queer people, Druze, Alawites, and the like. Neither do their governments, which would absolutely have the power to lobby or use economic leverage to create real progress on these issues.
One reasons then, that liberation is a plaything for these people. It is a means of justifying barbarism by painting the opposition as irredeemable Saracens, with no concern for the actual victims.
